Are borer beetles in Black Wattle firewood a problem?
From time to time, you may notice signs of borer beetles in firewood, including Black Wattle. This is completely normal and can happen with almost any type of wood.
Borer beetles usually enter the tree while it is still alive. Once the tree is cut down, split and seasoned for use as firewood, the beetle or its larvae may still remain inside the timber. In some cases, larvae can remain hidden in wood for a long time before any signs become visible.
This does not mean the wood is bad, unsafe or unsuitable for your fireplace or braai. It is simply a natural part of working with real timber.
The main thing to look out for is a fine, powdery dust on or around the wood. This dust is often called frass and is caused by small beetles or larvae burrowing inside the timber. You may also notice tiny holes in the wood where the beetles have moved through or emerged.
These beetles usually remain within the piece of wood they are already in, and the risk of them spreading from firewood is low when the wood is stored correctly. However, as a precaution, we recommend storing firewood outside or in a well-ventilated area, and only bringing in the amount you plan to use.
If you notice fresh dust or signs of activity, we recommend either burning that piece of wood soon or moving it outside and disposing of it. This helps avoid having any active insects indoors.
Black Wattle remains a great firewood option, and the occasional sign of borer beetles is normal when dealing with natural wood.

Why is Black Wattle the best, most ethical choice?
Black Wattle is an invasive alien plant in South Africa. The Black Wattle spreads quickly and invades grassland and stream banks where it clogs rivers and causes soil erosion. Very little will grow in such dense thicket that Black Wattle creates. By choosing Black Wattle as your choice of firewood you are assisting our South African plants as they are having to compete with Black Wattle for sunlight and water.

We have 2 types of bags. Normal plastic firewood bags which are 9–10 kg each. As well as our “big bags” which are approximately 50 kg per bag.
